Are you involved in the design of user interfaces? As you know all too well, good intentions are not enough to achieve an engaging, productive and safe experience for your users. You need to master a broad set of methods and techniques in User-Centered Design (UCD). Practical advice and feedback from experienced UCD professionals also help.

On a regular basis, Namahn conducts a master class on User-Centered Design. During two days, you can experience working at Namahn first-hand and gain insight into our User-Centered Design methods and techniques, which grew from hundreds of projects in over twenty years.

Led by Tom Stevens and featuring contributions from Mieke Daniels, Koen Peters, Joannes Vandermeulen and Johan Van Maldeghem, this highly practical master class challenges the know-how of a small group of participants and teach them how to apply UCD techniques the Namahn way. Intensive, hands-on and intimate, the master class takes place in our library and design studio in central Brussels.

Personas are a powerful method for keeping a focus on your target audience throughout the design process. However, despite the increasing popularity of the persona method, it is still very hard to find good information on how to create and employ personas. Therefore, Lene Nielsen (Snitker & Co.) created a full-day persona course. In response to the enthusiastic reactions to the previous editions in Copenhagen, User Intelligence and Snitker & Co. have joined hands to organize this course in Amsterdam.

World Usability Day

"Why doesn't this work right? What am I supposed to do with this now?"

World Usability Day is for everyone who's ever asked these questions. This Earth Day style event, focused on raising awareness and visibility of usability engineering and user centered design, is currently being organized by volunteers and local event coordinators from around the world. Whether a usability professional or just an enthusiastic (or frustrated) user, each participant is making a contribution to 'making life easy'.

World Usability Day promotes the value of usability engineering and user-centered design and the belief that every user has the responsibility to ask for things that work better. The Usability Professionals' Association is doing that by encouraging, organizing, and sponsoring 36 hours of activities at the local level around the globe, all occurring on November 8, 2007.

The importance of usability is not trivial; it is connected to important everyday things such as education, healthcare and safety. Tools and systems that are usable are more effective in teaching students. Healthcare professionals can be more confident with safer and understandable tools providing better quality healthcare to their patients. Government institutions can rely on easy to use and understandable voting machines to insure accurate and democratic elections. Usable technology makes a difference to everyone, everywhere around the world.

Passion for Interaction Design

The Design By Fire conference strives to be the incubator for the newest ideas on interaction design. We invited eight inspiring professionals with a passion for interaction design to share their vision with you.

Preparations for the second Design by Fire conference have started! The date is set on 21 October 2008, that's exact five months from now. The list of confirmed speakers makes that we can hardly wait.

Brendan Dawes (author of the inspiring book ‘Analog in, Digital Out’) accepted the invitation to take care of the keynote presentation.

August de los Reyes, as Experience Architect involved in the Microsoft Surface project, will share his expertise in designing for natural user interfaces.

Christian Behrens is a new media designer based in Berlin. He recently finished his M.A. thesis on information design principles.

Binnen de Chi gemeenschap en ACMCHI in het bijzonder speelt Nederland vanaf het begin een prominente rol: als voortrekker van de wereldwijde organisatie, met invloedrijke ontwerpers bij Microsoft en Apple, maar ook vanwege de grote Nederlandse vakvereniging Chi-Nederland (voorheen Sigchi.nl) met een traditie van 12 boeiende internationale conferenties. Om deze prominente rol in de toekomst verder uit te bouwen is Chi-Nederland voordurend op zoek naar nieuw enthousiast talent.

Van oudsher waren HCI ontwerpers, docenten en onderzoekers self-made pioniers. Tegenwoordig is er ook alom vraag naar goed opgeleide HCI-specialisten – een natuurlijk proces voor een volwassen wordend vakgebied. Chi-Nederland wil de opleidingen, onderzoekers en studenten in Nederland die zich richten op het HCI vakgebied dan ook graag ondersteunen en stimuleren. Om tot excellentie aan te zetten heeft Chi-Nederland een jaarlijkse prijs voor de beste HCI afstudeerder in Nederland ingesteld. Als eerbetoon is deze prijs de Gerrit van der Veer prijs genoemd, naar één van de grote HCI-pioniers, en mede-oprichter van Chi-Nederland.

Gebruiksvriendelijk is een website waar de gebruiker moeiteloos zijn weg vindt. Zonder te zoeken de informatie vinden die u nodig heeft. Zonder instructie begrijpen hoe u uw doel kan bereiken. Voor heldere en duidelijke communicatie is gebruiksvriendelijkheid dus van groot belang. De organisatie wil het grote belang van gebruiksvriendelijkheid nog eens extra onderstrepen. Dit doen we door het jaarlijks uitreiken van de Usability Award: de prijs voor de meest gebruiksvriendelijke website.

Oké, eerlijk is eerlijk: Microsoft is niet groot geworden door design. Maar we weten wel iets van technologie. En daar merken we dat gemak, schoonheid en emotie steeds belangrijker worden. Design is een voorwaarde voor succes. Tijdens Mix essentials willen we je graag inspireren en nieuwe ontwikkelingen laten zien op gebied van design.

Design. Geen code.

Mix essentials is voor creatieven zoals jij - webdesigners, interaction designers, artdirectors - die graag nieuwe creatieve wegen verkennen, maar niet geïnteresseerd zijn in code. Daarnaast wel willen weten wat de ontwikkelingen zijn op het gebied van User Experience, wat de relatie is tussen design en emotie. Het Web is in beweging: het vindt steeds meer zijn weg naar onze telefoon, onze auto, ons huis en onze straat. En de interactie tussen ons en het web is ook nog eens slimmer en rijker dan ooit. Bluetooth en RFID zorgen voor gepersonaliseerde omgevingskaarten en reclame in de bushalte. De auto van je collega bepaalt zonder moeite de beste route naar je huis. Je telefoon doet je een suggestie voor een restaurantje voor morgen. O ja, en je 176 beste online vrienden weten al dat je er gegeten hebt, voordat je ze het zelf hebt kunnen vertellen!

Van oudsher gaat het bij mobiele apparatuur om eigenschappen die het mogelijk maken om onderweg informatie te benaderen, of met anderen of met systemen te communiceren. Maar wat als we de gebruiker centraal zetten? Wat betekent mobiliteit voor mensen onderweg die interactie hebben met technologie in hun omgeving? The Web and Beyond 2008: Mobility gaat de diepte in.

Chi Nederland lezing Sanne Kistemaker

Hoe kun je met een communicatiemiddel drie generaties met elkaar verbinden? Hoe kun je oude mensen die geen ervaring met de PC laat staan Internet hebben toch kennis laten maken met de voordelen van elektronische informatieoverdracht? Hoe ontwerp je samen met de eindgebruiker? Soms lijkt het dat oudere mensen aan de zijlijn staan wanneer ze hun kleinkinderen enthousiast horen praten over hyves, chatten en bloggen.

Nieuwe communicatie middelen voor een nieuwe generatie die digibeten uitsluiten van sociale deelname? Niet als het aan Sanne Kistemakers ligt. Zij brengt de tijd van een ingelijst vakantiekiekje en handgeschreven brief terug en overbrugt hiermee een generatiekloof. Haar Award Winning ontwerp 'Piece of Family' is een modern schrijf- en plakboek; schrijf er in of plaats een foto en de informatie word op een simpele manier gescand en aan het familie-weblog toegevoegd. IA Summit 2008

The Information Architecture Summit is the premier gathering place for those interested in information architecture. The 2007 IA Summit attracted over 570 attendees, including beginners, experienced IAs, and people from a range of related fields.

The 2008 theme of 'Experiencing Information' shifts the focus back to users. A user experience exists only to allow people to 'do things' (in the broadest sense ... buying books, sharing photos with friends, looking something up on wikipedia, etc). Pretty (and) Smart: User experience design en research bij Microsoft

Aan de hand van concrete praktijkvoorbeelden zullen ze ingaan op vragen als: 'wat is de unieke toegevoegde waarde van een ontwerper en researcher binnen een team van verschillende talenten?' 'Hoe ga je om met het vooroordeel dat ontwerpers een product vooral mooi zouden moeten maken?' 'Hoe stuur je het ontwerpproces aan met een heldere productvisie?'

Sander Viegers werkt als User Experience Design Lead in de Office Design Group van Microsoft in Redmond (USA). Hij houdt zich bezig met het ontwerpen van nieuwe producten voor de professionele markt en het verbeteren van bestaande producten zoals Word, PowerPoint en Excel. Innovatie, gebruiksvriendelijkheid, heldere concepten en maakbaarheid staan centraal in het ontwerpproces bij Microsoft. Sander werkt sinds 2001 bij Microsoft. Voor de versie Office 2007 richtte Sander zijn aandacht op Excel 2007. Sander is afgestudeerd aan de TU Delft richting Industrieel Ontwerpen en heeft diverse patenten op zijn naam staan.

Arne de Booij werkt als Senior User Experience Researcher binnen het Microsoft Dynamics User Experience team. Deze groep heeft als doel om bedrijfssoftware te ontwerpen die aansluit bij de bedrijfsprocessen en de werknemers die deze processen uitvoeren. Arne werkt sinds 2000 bij Microsoft en is begonnen in de MSN messenger groep in Redmond (USA). Hij heeft daarna aan Windows Vista gewerkt en werkt sinds 2003 in de Microsoft Dynamics groep. Eerst vanuit Denemarken en sinds oktober vanuit Nederland. Arne is afgestudeerd aan de RUG in Experimentele Psychologie en heeft daarna de TWAIO USI opleiding in Eindhoven afgerond.

"Informationsarchitektur - Information Raum geben

Ziel der Konferenz ist es, nicht nur 'the state of the art' im Bereich der Informationsarchitektur aufzuzeigen und aktuelle Methoden und Werkzeuge zu demonstrieren, sondern auch den Blick in die Zukunft zu wagen und neue Herausforderungen und Chancen für die Praxis, das Management und die Ausbildung herauszuarbeiten und einen fruchtbaren Austausch zwischen Praktikern, Theoretikern, Vermittlern und Entscheidern zu ermöglichen. Die Konferenz richtet sich auch an Quereinsteiger und an alle, die sich in Zukunft beruflich im Feld der Informationsarchitektur bewegen möchten.

Bei der Planung und Entwicklung von interaktiven Informationssystemen und Websites gewinnt Informationsarchitektur auch in Deutschland einen immer höheren Stellenwert. Die IA-Konferenz, als Fortsetzungsveranstaltung der ersten deutschen IA-Tagung, die 2005 in Frankfurt stattfand, ist dementsprechend gewachsen und kann dieses Jahr mehrere Parallelsessions anbieten. In der Absicht, die Praxis der Informationsarchitektur möglichst umfassend in den Blick zu bekommen, öffnet sich das Programm einem breiten Themenspektrum. Het programma bestaat uit nationale en internationale topsprekers die zowel op praktisch/operationeel als op strategisch niveau hun ervaringen en kennis delen. Deze keynotes schetsen het umfeld, de trends en de standaarden.

Weten door meten, daar gaat het om tijdens het eerste Webanalytics congres. Leer hoe u effectief doelen stelt door het bijhouden van Key Perfomance Indicators (KPI's). Sinds enige tijd is het web volgens sommigen bezig met een nieuwe fase. Het product 'Web' is toe aan versie 2.0!

De ideeën over wat de veranderingen in deze nieuwe versie zijn, vinden ook weerslag in de bibliotheekwereld. Bibliotheken verschaften leergierigen toegang tot interessante informatie lang voordat het web bestond. De bibliothecaris en later de goed gerangschikte kaartenbak verwezen je naar de juiste boekenplank.

Steeds meer wordt digitaal: het zoeken naar het juiste boek, het boek zelf, de video... De bibliothecaris? In bibliotheek 2.0 (library 2.0) wijzen lezers elkaar toch op wat je waar kan vinden en wat je wel - en niet moet lezen? Of wordt de bibliotheekbezoeker een digitaal-dolende. Op zoek naar de bibliothecaris.

Wat zijn de ontwikkelingen in de bibliotheekwereld en waar gaat het in de toekomst naar toe met deze Informatiebolwerken? Hierover organiseert Stroomt een themamiddag. Op deze middag hebben wij een aantal interessante sprekers bereid gevonden hun kennis over het onderwerp te delen. Ook is er ruimte voor discussie aan de hand van een aantal stellingen van de sprekers. Tijdens de borrel is gelegenheid kennis te maken met mede-geïnteresseerden.

We hebben een mooie locatie gekozen: de collegezaal van sterrenwacht Sonnenborgh midden in de stad Utrecht. In deze sterrenwacht is, hoe toepasselijk, ook een oude bibliotheek te bewonderen. Tijdens de rondleiding krijg je deze te zien. Lees hieronder meer en schrijf je in als deelnemer. Deelname is gratis, maar let op: het aantal plaatsen in de collegezaal is beperkt!

Congres 'De Interactieve Ondernemer'

Bent u ondernemer en geïnteresseerd in hoe u de gebruiksvriendelijkheid van uw producten en/of diensten kunt verbeteren en daardoor succesvoller kunt ondernemen? Of bent u een ontwerper/ontwikkelaar die interesse heeft in creatieve bedrijfsvoering en hoe u door klantinteractie uw creativiteit en design expertise beter te gelde kunt maken (return on creativity)?

Dan nodigen wij u graag uit voor 'De Interactieve Ondernemer' op woensdag 10 oktober. Die middag organiseert het IOP Mens-Machine Interactie samen met de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht een evenement speciaal voor ondernemers en ontwerpers waar creativiteit, gebruiksvriendelijk product design en klantinteractie centraal zullen staan.

U kunt in een design-omgeving deelnemen aan twee verschillende workshops en op de informatiemarkt kennismaken met bedrijven die de nieuwste methoden en technieken aanbieden voor gebruiksvriendelijk en creatief product design. Daarnaast worden er interessante ‘user-centered design’ cases en projecten van IOP-MMI, HKU en Telematica Instituut gepresenteerd. De dag wordt afgesloten door een gezamenlijke design wedstrijd en borrel.

Workshops

Interaction Design: Gebruiksvriendelijk design van uw producten en diensten; de klant als co-designer. Deze workshop wordt verzorgd door prof. dr. Gerrit van der Veer van de Open Universiteit Nederland in samenwerking met Satama Interactive, Info.nl en Noldus IT.

Return on Creativity: Hoe creativiteit en verbeeldingskracht zich terugbetalen; hoe ondernemerschap en creatief netwerken voor uw klant het verschil maken. Deze workshop wordt verzorgd door prof. dr. Giep Hagoort van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in samenwerking met PSAU/UU, Cultureel MKB en Via Traiectum.

Privacy aware smart surroundings

"The Smart Surroundings research program is investigating a new paradigm for bringing the flexibility of information technology to bear in every aspect of daily life. It foresees that people will be surrounded by deeply embedded and flexibly networked systems that provide easily accessible yet unobtrusive support for an open-ended range of activities, to enrich daily life and to increase productivity at work.

In order to make this vision true the Smart Surroundings not only have to be aware of the people in the environment, but also about their context and in some cases even about their intentions. Without a privacy aware architecture these surroundings, which are meant to help us and make our live easier and more pleasant, may turn into a nightmare. In this talk I will provide a motivation for making privacy an important design issue of a smart surroundings architecture and show means to achieve such a privacy aware environment."

"A symposium about the mutual influence of science fiction and computer technology development. Organized by Waag Society, XS4ALL Internet and the Cyberspace Salvations research team.

Prominent Virtual World designers, cyberpunk authors and the editor of a cyberculture magazine will engage in discussions with the audience and social scientists. The main theme is the cross-fertilization between science fiction and ‘science faction’ – how it took place in the past and can shape technologies of the future.

In the mid-1980s digital technologies seemed to change the world profoundly. Only nobody knew how. In 1984 William Gibson introduced the concept of ‘cyberspace’- an otherworldly space that was enclosed in a network of computers. His work and that of other cyberpunk writers like Bruce Sterling and Rudy Rucker, greatly inspired developers of computers, internet and games such as World of Warcraft and Second Life. These technologies, in turn, fed the imaginations of science fiction writers."

Designing usable human-computer interfaces is a tough job. Objective usability testing of creative designs for computer systems that are used by adults might be even harder. But what about creative systems that are used by children? While the potential of this product category grows, there’s a lot of uncharted territory for the interaction designer.

Panos Markopoulos is an Associate Professor at the TU/e in the department of Industrial Design. He teaches for the USI post-graduate programme where he is responsible for curriculum affairs. He has worked as a researcher at Queen Mary University of London and Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven. His research and teaching topics are related to user system interaction with ambient intelligence environments and interaction design for children.

Peter Frings (Agfa Graphics): The road to usability is paved...

How to convert a software development team – one that has been creating black-box software and device drivers for eons – into a team that creates a very complex and highly interactive product? Peter will present lessons that he has learned over a period of ten years.

Peter Frings is an Industrial Engineer by education and started work as a field engineer for control systems. After a few years, he moved on to programming control systems, involving green-screen (VT100) user interfaces. He started work at Agfa as a developer of prepress production systems. Since 1997, he’s in charge of designing user interfaces for prepress workflow systems."
